Layer 00 · The job

Most Tulsa concrete calls fall into a handful of jobs: tear out and replace a driveway, pour a patio off the back door, add a stamped surface, fix a sunken walk, or put a slab under a garage or shop. Each one asks different questions about thickness, reinforcement and what happens at the edges.

Layer 01 · The ground

Everything here sits on clay that moves.

Several clay soils mapped around Tulsa formed from weathered shale. The federal description of the Summit series, whose type location lies six miles east of Tulsa, says it cracks deep and wide in summer and carries a shrink-swell rating high enough to be called vertic. Wet months push it up; dry months pull it away from the underside of a slab.

That movement can crack a drive no matter how good the mix was. Ask any bidder how they handle it before you ask about color.

Layer 02 · The base

The part of the quote you will never see again.

Once the sod and topsoil are gone, the crew that bids your job should be able to explain how deep they dig, what they do with a soft spot, and how thick the compacted aggregate will be. For driveway approaches in the street right-of-way, City of Tulsa Standard 701 calls for six inches of concrete on six inches of Type A aggregate base. Private slabs have no single number, which is exactly why the quote should state one.

Drainage belongs to the base conversation too. A slab that sheds water toward the house feeds the clay you just read about.

Layer 03 · The pour

Steel, joints and patience.

Reinforcement only helps when it ends up inside the slab rather than lying on the gravel, so ask whether rebar or wire sits on chairs. Ask where the control joints go and when they are cut; a joint placed early gives the inevitable crack a straight line to follow.

Weather matters here. Tulsa averages 74 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter and 71.9 days at or below freezing, per the National Weather Service 1991–2020 normals. Hot, windy afternoons dry the surface too fast; hard freezes arrive, on average, around November 14. A good bid says how fresh concrete will be protected in either case.

Layer 04 · The street

Where your driveway stops being only yours.

The last few feet of a Tulsa driveway usually cross public right-of-way. The City’s code says no one may build or repair a sidewalk, driveway or curb there without a Right-of-Way Minor Construction permit, and its application form asks for an inspection call 24 hours before concrete is placed. Title 49 lists the fee at $242.00.

Width is regulated too. In single-family zoning, Table 55-6 of the Tulsa Zoning Code caps a driveway within the right-of-way at 20 to 27 feet depending on lot frontage, and never more than half the frontage. The driveway permit field note walks through every step.

Budget before bids

The table gives broad planning illustrations per square foot. They are not averages we measured in Tulsa and no contractor has offered them. Demolition and hauling, a thickened edge, a long wheelbarrow run to a backyard or a stamped pattern can move a job well outside them.

Tulsa neighborhoods and nearby cities, each with its own paperwork.

A Tulsa mailing address does not tell you which city issues the permit. Owasso, Jenks, Bixby, Sand Springs and Sapulpa each run their own public works and permit desks, and inside Tulsa a historic preservation district or the Midtown character overlay can add limits on paving and driveway width.
